The stronger involvement of Roma communities is necessary

Vice-President Viviane Reding presented the European Commission's work programme for 2012 in the European Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. In her presentation Commissioner Reding highlighted the necessity of effectively implementing the European Roma Strategy and expressed her appreciation for the work done by Rapporteur Lívia Járóka. In her speech MEP Járóka urged the stronger involvement of Roma and marginalized communities into decisions affecting their lives.

International conference on Roma Holocaust - We shall remember

The European Roma Information Office held a conference today in Brussels titled "Remembering the Forgotten Roma Holocaust". Participant MEP Lívia Járóka reminded in her speech, that the ignorance concerning Roma history expressed by the majority society has contributed to a lot of prejudice and it could also represent an obstacle of their acceptance and inclusion. She urged therefore to support researchers in raising awareness of the centuries-long common history that majority societies share with Roma.

The European Parliament in Strasbourg held a debate on the situation of Roma in Member States. MEP Lívia Járóka pointed out four tasks that await EU institutions: the evaluation and possible revision of national Roma inclusion strategies by the Commission, the development of a European crisis map measuring up the most disadvantaged micro-regions, the modification of the next Multiannual Financial Framework, and the full transposition and implementation of the EU directive on equal treatment.

Internship Programme

 

The aim of the internship programme is to support the emergence of a group of European Roma youngsters  who will gain a broad European perspective and practice , a high level of qualified knowledge of the political processes, of institutional structures and of available resources within the EU, along with introducing the interns into the functioning of European political processes, especially with respect to the structure and working patterns within the European Parliament. In order to achieve this, interns should actively participate in the work of the MEP's office, undertaking a whole spectrum of tasks and acquainting themselves with the bodies that play an important role within the political process.

 

Each stagiaire is reimbursed on arrival with the cost of a return air fare between his or her place of origin and Brussels. Accommodation in Brussels and Strasbourg is provided free of charge to the stagiaire. A stipend of €250 weekly is paid.

 

Conditions for application are the follows:

  • citizenship: EU or associated state
  • age: 22-35
  • currently pursuing/completed higher education (B.A. and/or M.A)
  • very good knowledge of English and good writing skills
  • experience on Roma issues

 

The application, which must be submitted in English should contain:

 

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • letter of motivation, explaining expectations of the program and the way in which one intends to integrate this experience into their future activities ( in English)
  • certificates attesting university degrees and language skills
  • reference by an academic or employer who knows the candidate well

 

Application for admission is continuous; however you are advised  to send your application 6 months prior to the preferred starting date of your internship
